THE SOUND

I am not a religious person,
but woodblocks
being pressed together at seven PM
make me feel like maybe
god is inside a sound
like that

MANY TWITCHING LEGS

Staring at the roach on my ceiling at 11pm
while holding a glass of wine,
I wonder if he has been there
since I left for work because
he has been poisoned,
or not

And now I am sure I will have
some kind of horrible dream tonight,
thanks to his stagnation and my
many twitching
legs

EVERYONE

is so damn skinny
that I just might
stay inside

They talk about
Starbucks for lunch,
and I stare
at the center console

Well, the average woman
in the United States today
weighs 140 pounds,
but if you walk into a store
with wooden floors,
and ask them
what song is playing,
you wouldn't know it.

You could try and catch
a lyric and look it up
yourself, but keep
in mind that
back in 1952
you could measure
a mannequin's hip and
come up with
34 inches.

EVERYWHERE

This guy I know,
he is "finding God everywhere
he
goes"
and I am finding emails
about
cats and dogs
being skinned alive
in China.

Some with collars
some with out...
either way, it
fills my stomach
with gravel, and
I Wonder if they'll be
able to hear all that
Olympic business
going on?

Or maybe
when you're awaiting
death among the dead,
you don't hear much
besides the
releasing latch.

ONE 5 OZ. CANDLE FOR $2.50

I walk around in cowboy boots
and sunglasses,
with a brown paper bag in one hand,
but what they don't know
is that inside
there is only soy milk
and one 5 oz. candle

MY BRAIN IS GIVING UP ON ME

I wake up in the middle of night
screaming about cockroaches and
I don't even kill them when I see them
on my carpet

They might have to sit beneath a jar
for a few minutes, but they always
end up
back outside
legs twitching,
antenae in tact.

ON DROWNING IN A RIVER OR PROBABLY JUST A CANAL

I watch the MASON jar
fill up like a car under water
and wonder
if I
would be one of the people
you hear about on the news
who cut the seat belt
in time

Yes, this enters my head
as I grasp the butterknife
to scrape the label

But all I really wanted was
something clean and simple
to drink from.

THE RAIN, IT COMES IN THE AFTERNOON

It's storming outside
and the thunder,
while alone,
is something I am not afraid of

However,
the flowers you brought have died
and are smelling of attics in Ohio
as I am leaving them to dry

IT'S ENGRAVED, YOU SEE, AND CAME IN THE MAIL

I shiver without reason
and my hair
stands up straight as
I contemplate the lives
of people with cable

"I'm not even gonna lie,
I miss TV," he said before
digging up the
Tiffany's necklace
I never asked for from
1 Christmas and
86 miles ago

We sat on dark wood floors
in a creaky house as
he handed me bobby pins
and clips I didn't care about
anymore, then got too drunk
to see my face

I left a plastic flower on
his broken bathroom sink
before I left, but I know his teeth are
rotting, regardless
in that mis-firing
head of his.

THERE IS DEFINATELY SOMETHING WRONG

I know this because today
I had to wrap a 188.00 dollar
pair of jeans
twice
in tissue paper because
the first sheet was
"too wrinkled."

Tomorrow this will go on being true
and I will go on eating beans
while staring at the wall.

THE ONE BY THE BEACH WAS AS BIG AS A BIRD

All these dying butterflies
are really getting to me

To see them flailing about
on the concrete
brings visions of broken windows
and germinating seeds, and
for a second I believe I might
actually
do something.

A bit about Nicole: Nicole is interested in the facial expressions of fish and prefers to pick dandelions in Lenoir, North Carolina. She thinks all people who write poetry should develop a taste for apple brandy.
