memo

I remember myself at 10
imaging myself at 80
remembering back
to the exact moment
when I typed this

- j. d. nelson

wispy wasp

where's your honey,
little sucker?
haw! there I am, age 3,
eatin' one --
maybe I'll have me
a slice of watermelon,
maybe a box of bandages

Career Day

cement truck driver,
helmet washer,
pixel licker,
pretzel twister,
skeet sweeper,
midnight moaner,
all-aloner,
bargain driver,
one-eyed captain,
pastry baker,
early waker,
insurance henchman,
banquet technician,
senior v.p. of reality,
ball dodger,
king of cookies,
chub runner

I become a spider at night

I watch & wait.
I make wide circles
on the ceiling.
I might give you a bite
while you're sleeping,
just to let you know
I'm there.

Uncharted

I tried to imagine
what the island looked like
from a bird's perspective.
Assuming the form of a sea-raptor,
I made long, slow circles in the air,
hundreds of feet above
my impossible shadow.

I still can't see what you're holding

Space Cat looked back
& reminded himself
that everyone else
was imaginary --
no, wait --
it was he
who was imaginary --
was that right?

kneecaps & steel beads

hall of flames,
managed care.
I have a piece of black tooth
around here somewhere.
can we Kennedy
until sky-maw
swallows the stars?
pink gums bleeding
from the morning razor,
forked up lip curl.
I should be locked up & medicated --
but then there'd be no more of this.

Ukiah No. 151

endless
figure-eights:
a lone
moth
beneath
the street light

- j. d. nelson

a spider's prayer

I hope my legs
aren't ripped off
one
by one.

Wishlist

I could use sandpaper tissues for my old wooden nose.
I could use a sock-glove for my toe-claw.
I could use more of these little notebooks
& maybe a box of pens --
but make sure the ink is black --
I hate writing in blue.
I could use leaves on a branch
& green tattoos on my hands.
I could use lips on my fingertips.

Crystal Kit

"We could use a new radio, Crowe,"
said Yellow Rabbit as he started
poking around on the Internet.
The next voice on the line will be
that of that of that
I knew there was a glitch
in the ssssss sys system system
thought Yellow Rabbit and suddenly
they were no longer looking for radios
from the comfort of Yellow Rabbit's Cube.
Something shifted and I think we're in
flat two-dimensional subspace
waiting for transmission code ALPHA
to reel in a tasty salty sea egg.

dry your eyes with fire

held captive,
we stare into
the vast darkness
& our minds
begin to play tricks.
I'm seeing everything
as it should be:
we'll all be cloned,
no clowning.
